Pokémon Crystal Legacy

TIMELESS
VERSION

Gotta catch even more, now without a clock. A fork of Crystal Legacy that fixes the notorious bug where playing on a flash cartridge could quietly erase your saved Pokémon. Your save stays safe, day and night still work, and time is finally yours to set. (RIP, RTC.)

A CRYSTAL LEGACY FORK

Original Crystal tells time with a battery-backed clock chip built into the cartridge. On a flash cartridge that doesn't have one, those clock reads quietly scribble over your saved Pokémon. Timeless removes the clock entirely and hands time back to you.

WHY THIS FORK EXISTS

The clock that ate Box 8

Here's the short version. The original game keeps time with a tiny clock chip built right into the cartridge. An emulator recreates that chip in software, so it's fine. But some flash cartridges and reproduction carts, a common way to play a fan patch on real hardware, leave that chip out. So when the game tries to ask the clock what time it is, it ends up writing its time data on top of your saved Pokémon instead.

That's where the two infamous bugs come from: Box 8 keeps getting wiped, and the in-game clock jumps around on its own as you play.

The fix, in plain English: this fork ships the game on a different, clock-free cartridge type, so there's simply no clock left to break. Your existing save still works, nothing about your Pokémon or boxes changes, and the corruption can never happen again.

NERDY EXPLANATION the register-level story · in depth

Original Crystal uses an MBC3 mapper with a battery-backed Real-Time Clock. The game tells time by talking to that chip. On a flash cart with no real RTC, those conversations don't return garbage. They silently overwrite your saved game.

01

A register doing double duty

On MBC3, writing $4000 picks an SRAM bank ($00–$03) or an RTC register ($08–$0C). Same address, two jobs.

02

No clock, no clock mode

With no RTC, the mapper has no $08–$0C mode. The day-low selector $0B is treated as plain SRAM bank 3, which on this save layout begins exactly at Box 8.

03

Reads & writes corrupt

Writing the clock scribbles time bytes over Box 8. Reading it loads box bytes as the current time, so the clock lurches around whenever you pick berries, battle, or open the Pokégear.

⚠️

Worse: the garbage day count routinely reads as “>140 days passed,” so the time fix-up code calls SetClock to “correct” it, causing more writes, more corruption. This is the bug behind “Box 8 keeps getting wiped” and “the clock changes on its own.”

THE FIX

Ship as MBC5

If the game never touches the RTC, it never needs the clock hardware at all. MBC5 is a strict superset of MBC3's banking (same SRAM selects, same ROM banking), but it has no RTC and no $08–$0C mode. Even a stray clock-style write has nowhere to land as a clock. The corruption path simply can't be re-enabled.

SAVE FORMAT Identical. Box layout, 32 KB SRAM & battery all unchanged.
YOUR .SAV Existing saves work as-is. No byte patching needed.
HARDWARE Flash carts, FPGA cores & emulators, all verified solid.
MORE THAN A BUGFIX

Time on your terms

Even on an emulator or an RTC flash cart, where your save was always safe, this is the version to play. Pulling the clock out didn't just stop the corruption. It reshaped Crystal around the way people actually play today, starting with the one thing every fan wishes the originals had.

CELEBI'S BLESSING

Change the time anywhere, mid-game

You don't have limitless hours to wait for in-game days to roll over. Maybe you only get one hour to play, and it happens to be the middle of the night. That shouldn't keep you from harvesting berries, evolving Eevee, or grooming a baby Pokémon to full happiness. Celebi's gift is command over time itself: open the Pokégear Clock and set the time right where you stand, no restarting, no trip back to the title screen. The game finally bends to your schedule, the way a modern Pokémon game should.

POKÉGEAR › CLOCK › HOLD SELECT + UP

And the daily grind? Ungated.

With time in your hands, a whole class of once-a-day rewards lost their daily cap. Run them back to back, no clock-watching, no sleeping on it.

Berry tree and trainer

Berries on tap

Berry trees refill every single time instead of once a day. Endless healing items and held berries, harvested as fast as you can walk the loop.

Goldenrod haircut brother and trainer

Grooming & happiness

Visit the Goldenrod haircut brothers as often as you want to pump friendship. Evolve happiness Pokémon on the spot, baby mons like Pichu and Cleffa, and Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon.

Buena at the radio station

Radio Card points

Buena's Password pays out every visit with no daily cap, so Blue Card points and their prizes pile up in minutes instead of weeks.

Player at the Goldenrod bargain counter

The Goldenrod money trick

The once-a-day payout is now repeatable. Run it as many times as you like for quick, reliable cash, no day-skipping required.

...and plenty more, from the Move Tutor to the Trainer House. See the full list of what changed →

CONTROL TIME YOURSELF

A frozen clock you control

With the RTC gone, time is a software value you set that never advances on its own. Set it to night and grind for an hour, and it stays night. Day & night palettes are stable. The day counter only moves when you move it.

HootHoot

Time of day

Morn / Day / Nite. Drives wild encounters & palettes, and time-locked NPCs like Daisy at 3 PM, Buena at night, and the bargain shop in the morning.

Clefairy and Lapras

Weekday

Mon–Sun. Sets every weekday-locked event, from Lapras on Friday to the rooftop sale, the weekly sibling NPCs, and which haircut brother is in.

Celebi

No more waiting. This version makes the old day-locked rewards instant, so you almost never need to advance the day. The one exception is Kurt's GS Ball: hand it over, then advance a day in the clock screen to trigger the Celebi encounter event in Ilex Forest (it moves Kurt out of his house, the normal event flow).

Three ways to open the clock screen

All three write the same offsets, so pick whichever is convenient.

OPTION A
New Game

The normal “set the time” prompt at the start of the game.

OPTION B
Title screen reset

Hold Down + B on the Suicune-leap title screen to re-open the vanilla clock reset.

NEW
OPTION C
Pokégear shortcut

On the Pokégear Clock card, hold SELECT + UP. Adjust time mid-route without leaving for the title.

Prefer moving time forward. The daily reset is driven by the day rolling over, not by today's date being later. If you set the clock backward past midnight, some daily flags stay “already done today” until you advance forward through a midnight again.

TIME-BASED EVENTS

Nothing removed, just driven by you

Almost every daily/weekly event keys off the day counter, not the clock chip, so they all still work. They just advance when you move the clock. One category got better:

Togepi
Always available: daily limit removed
These repeatable benefits no longer track a “did it today” flag. Any weekday / time gate is kept; only the once-per-day cap is gone.
Berry / fruit trees

Refilled every time, instantly. No gate.

Move Tutor

Teaches a special move on any visit.

Trainer House

Battle as often as you like; weekday picks the opponent.

Haircut brothers

Repeat for happiness; weekday picks older vs. younger.

Buena's Password · night

Grind Blue Card points. Set the clock to night.

Bargain shop · Mon AM

Set Monday + morning, then buy as much as you want.

Rival rematch · Mon/Wed

Refight at Indigo for XP/money. Re-enter the map to repeat.

Kurt's Apricorn balls

Finished instantly, same visit. Hand over more right away.

Time Capsule

Gen-1 trade link any time after meeting Bill, with no day-wait.

ADVANCE THE DAY

Once-per-day events

Daily-gift NPCs and daily swarms (Dunsparce, Yanma, fishing) keep their normal cadence. Advance the day to use them again or re-roll the swarm.

SET THE WEEKDAY

Weekday-locked

Rooftop sale, Lapras on Friday, the bitter-herb merchant, weekly siblings, the Clefairy dance. Set the matching weekday to make them appear.

SET THE TIME

Time-of-day-locked

Daisy's grooming (~3 PM), Buena at night, the bargain shop, and day/night encounters & palettes. Set the time of day to trigger them.

DRIVEN BY PLAY TIME

Phone calls run on console time

Incoming calls (rematch notices, daily-gift reminders, Buena's password) were scheduled by real elapsed clock minutes. With the clock frozen they would never fire, so we re-pointed them at the Game Boy's play-time counter, the odometer that ticks up every frame the console runs. The original timing still applies, so expect roughly 20 minutes of real play time before each call comes in. It is the same countdown Crystal always used, only measured against play time instead of the wall clock.

Ethan checking his Pokégear
HOW THE CALL TIMER WORKS

An internal timer ticks only in the overworld, while you walk or stand still, and pauses during battles and text. From the moment a number is registered (or the previous call ends), the game checks on a shrinking schedule, each check a 50% chance to ring:

20 min First check. The game rolls a 50% chance to ring.
30 min Missed? It doesn't make you wait another 20. Ten minutes later, another 50% roll.
35 min Five minutes later, another 50% roll.
38 min+ Three minutes later, then every three minutes after that, a fresh 50% roll until a call forces its way through.

The instant a call connects and resolves, the frame counter clears and the whole loop restarts from the 20-minute delay.

A couple of trade-offs: the Bug-Catching Contest's 20-minute timer no longer ticks down on its own (it just won't time you out), and Shuckie's one-time loan still needs a single day advanced before you can return him.

A GUARDIAN OF TIME

The Celebi cameo

A version about controlling time deserves a nod to the one Pokémon who travels through it. Timeless tucks a shimmering green visitor into two quiet moments, a little reward for paying attention.

CRYSTAL LEGACY

Floating beside Suicune

Celebi now floats over the title screen the whole time, drifting and bobbing beside Suicune as it leaps over the water. (It's also where you hold Down + B to reset the clock.)

PATCH IT YOURSELF

Building the ROM

Timeless ships as a .bps patch you apply to your own copy of Crystal. Here's the short version of what you need and how to do it.

REQUIREMENTS

A clean base ROM

You'll need a clean copy of an English base Crystal ROM. We can't tell you how or where to get one, as that's illegal, but a quick search will point you in the right direction.

Make sure it's clean: no randomizers, no previous versions of Crystal Legacy, and no other hacks applied.

RESOURCES

Tools & guides

Instructions

Before you start, load your base ROM into the patcher website (or a hash checker) and verify its SHA-1. It must match one of the hashes below. If it doesn't, you have a modified or bootleg ROM and need to find a real one.

Base Crystal V1.0 · Rev 0 · USA USE: VERSION USA
SHA-1 f4cd194bdee0d04ca4eac29e09b8e4e9d818c133
Base Crystal V1.1 · Rev 1 · USA, Europe USE: VERSION USA, EUROPE REV 1
SHA-1 f2f52230b536214ef7c9924f483392993e226cfb
  1. 1 Patch your base ROM with the matching .bps file using the patcher above. Both base revisions play identically for Timeless, so use whichever clean ROM you have.
  2. 2 After patching, rename the output ROM to Crystal Legacy Timeless so you can tell it apart.
⚠️

Alternate-language versions are not compatible: they will cause bugs. Use an English base ROM only.
